How To Maintain Your Garage Door

Posted on

If you use your garage on a regular basis, you definitely want the garage door to be functioning optimally, efficiently, and safely. You also want to keep your garage door looking like new for as long as possible, as the garage door has a major impact on the aesthetics of your home's exterior.

Inspect the Hardware

It is vital that you inspect the hardware of the garage door on a regular basis. This is especially true if you use your garage door daily because the hardware can loosen as the door moves. You should start the inspection by taking the time to tighten the bolts that connect the rails to the garage door's support brackets.

Once you've tightened these bolts, you can focus on inspecting the roller brackets. If the garage has nylon rollers, you will have an easy time spotting the defects. Typically, nylon rollers will crack or chip when they start to deteriorate. If your garage door has steel rollers, look for wear on the bearings. Also, the wheel of the steel roller will begin to tilt. You can purchase replacement rollers at any hardware store. When replacing the rollers, ensure that you don't remove the bottom roller bracket. There is a cable under extreme tension attached to this roller bracket.

You should also look for signs of wear on the lift cable. It may be necessary to use an old toothbrush to clear away the gunk from the lift cable before you can properly inspect it. Be on the lookout for broken strands. Replace any broken or damaged cables that you find. However, if the cable attached to the very bottom roller bracket is damaged, you should have a professional replace it as this cable is under a lot of tension.

Lubrication

Each year, you should use white lithium grease to lubricate the screw or chain on your garage door's opener. You can find spray-on versions of white lithium grease at the vast majority of home development stores. The lubrication will not only make operation of the garage smoother and quieter, but it will also greatly extend the life of the garage door's chain and opener. Before you lubricate the screw of the opener, you should check your Owner's Manual as some screw openers don't need lubrication.

As you can see, there are many things you can to do maintain your garage door. Just follow the tips above and your garage door will likely function efficiently and safely for many years to come. Talk to garage door experts like Virginia Door Inc for more information.
